The MTV VMAs are looking pretty strong for their 40th edition, with a lineup that includes popular host Megan Thee Stallion, highly reliable opening act Eminem, and two of the most talked-about artists of the year, Sabrina Carpenter and Chapelle Roan.
The 2024 VMAs are scheduled to air live from New York’s UBS Arena on Wednesday (September 11) at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Katy Perry, who won Video of the Year in 2011 for “Firework” and hosted the show in 2017, will receive the Video Vanguard Award and perform a medley of her hits. (She is the first person in VMA history to host, win Video of the Year and win the Vanguard Award, making her an MTV triple crown winner.)
Presenters will include Cyndi Lauper, who won the Moonman award for Best Female Video at the first VMAs on September 14, 1984. (The show has now become more public-minded; the award is now called Moonperson and is gender-neutral in all categories.) Also scheduled to present will be Carson Daly, who hosted MTV’s hit show TRL from 1998 to 2003, when the channel aired music videos instead of endless reruns of Ridiculousness and Catfish.
Eminem will open the show just weeks after his latest album, “The Death of Slim Shady (Coeur de Grace),” became his 11th album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Just this week, his 2005 hits compilation, “Curtain Call: The Hits,” became the first hip-hop album to spend 700 weeks on the Billboard 200.
Eminem is up for eight nominations this year. His smash hit “Houdini,” which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, is up for six, including Video of the Year and Song of the Summer. Additionally, Eminem is nominated for Artist of the Year and Best VMA Performance for his 2000 performance of “The Real Slim Shady” and “The Way I Am,” which featured more than 100 Eminem impersonators.
If Eminem wins any of the eight awards, he will break his tie with Peter Gabriel for the most awards won by a male artist in the show’s history (13).
Taylor Swift leads all artists with 12 nominations this year, and if she wins five more, she will pass Beyoncé, who currently has 27 nominations, behind Swift (23), Madonna (20) and Lady Gaga (18).
Teddy Swims and Jesse Murph will make their VMAs debuts, performing on the Extended Play Stage, while Le Seraphim will make their US awards debut, performing on the VMAs pre-show.
Public voting ended on Friday (September 6) on MTV’s website. Voting for Best New Artist will continue throughout the show.
With the addition of the social category, Swift still leads the list with the most nominations (12), followed by Post Malone (11), Eminem (8), Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, Sabrina Carpenter + SZA (7 each), Benson Boone, Billie Eilish, Chapel Rowan, Charli XCX, Glorilla, LISA, and Olivia Rodrigo + Teddy Swims (4 each).
Swift and Malone are not scheduled to perform, nor are other potential contenders including Grande, SZA, Boone and Eilish.
The 2024 VMAs will air live on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT across MTV’s global networks, including BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV, MTV2, Nick at Nite, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land, VH1 and Univision.
The 90-minute VMA pre-show special, hosted by Nessa, Dometi Pongo and Kevan Kenney, will air from 6:30pm-8pm ET/PT on MTV, MTV2, CMT and Logo.
Bruce Gilmer and Den of Thieves co-founder Jesse Ignjatovic are executive producers. Barb Biakowski is co-executive producer. Alicia Portugal and Jackie Barba are executive producers. Wendy Prout is executive, celebrity talent. Lisa Lauricella is executive, music talent.
