I’m a big proponent of seasonal closet cleanup. After you’ve reunited with your favorite outfits from seasons past and gotten rid of the ones that just don’t feel like you anymore, it’s time for the fun part: shopping for replacements. As I was doing a bit of inventorying my shoe closet for fall, I noticed five trends I’m most excited about and five that I honestly can’t wait to get rid of.
Keep scrolling to see which shoe trends I’m loving this fall and which ones are going away (no pun intended).
Buy: Suede boots Throw away: Platform boots
Fall is all about chic suede boots. Many of the boots I’ve been eyeing have a western vibe to them, which I love. Unfortunately, chunky boots are so thick that they’re uncomfortable to walk in and I don’t feel like walking around town in them. This fall, I want to go for a more refined, high-end look, and chunky soles feel a bit dated. It’s time to ditch them and replace them with some stylish suede alternatives.

Buy: Ballet flats Throw away: Stark white sneakers
Ballet flats have been hugely popular the past two seasons and look to continue into fall. Personally, I can’t wait to pair them with socks for that preppy/back-to-school vibe that hits the shelves every fall. Unfortunately, all-white sneakers were a miss this season. I see many of my style icons also using sneakers as an opportunity to experiment with color, but the all-white look just feels dated.

Add neon-colored shoes to accentuate the leopard print.
While I always like to have a bold shoe in my rotation, one pattern is taking center stage this fall: leopard. This sexy neutral has been one of the most popular patterns this fall, appearing on the runways, fashion people’s Instagram feeds, and celebrities. I’ve already got my hands on a pair of leopard pumps to wear with a chocolate brown sweater, but it’s time to say goodbye to some of my previous favorite bold-colored shoes: bright ones.

Trending: Sleek running shoes Ditching: Chunky sneakers
Say goodbye to chunky sneakers. It’s time for sleek, lightweight sneakers to take center stage. We mentioned earlier that coloured sneakers are on trend, and these sleek designs make them more approachable and easier to style. If you prefer neutral sneakers, don’t worry, we’ve linked some of those for you too.

Buy: Knee-high boots Throw away: Chelsea boots
I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of Chelsea boots. However, a few years ago a friend recommended I buy a pair, and for some reason, they ended up taking up space in my closet for a long time. Since they’re my favorite shoe to wear on cold-weather date nights, I decided to replace them with a classic knee-high boot.
