Every time we come across a discontinued model from an American automaker, we’re reminded of the good old days of automobiles, when crossovers didn’t exist and the industry as a whole wasn’t moving toward an electric future.
We could analyze this topic for paragraphs, but that’s not the purpose of this story, so it’s better to move on to the real reason behind it: a 1968 Ford Galaxie 500 XL with elegant looks, a powerful engine under the hood, and low mileage is looking for a new home.
This iteration was related to many other Fords and Mercurys, including the Country Squire, Ranch Wagon, LTD, Park Lane, Marauder, Marquis, etc. Most models produced for North America from 1964-1965 came with one of the many V8 engines available, with a few models featuring an inline-six engine.
So, what do you think is hiding under the hood of this 1968 Ford Galaxie 500 XL? If you answered V8 engine, then you either saw the photo we shared above or you just guessed. It’s a 390 ci, 6.4L unit mated to an automatic transmission. It has an Edelbrock carburetor and intake, and stopping power comes from the original front disc brakes.

According to the seller, this old car is equipped with power steering and power brakes. It also has air conditioning so you don’t have to sweat on those summer drives. The interior is mostly black with wood inserts and metal trim here and there. The dash, steering wheel, door cards, gauges, vents, etc. have aged very well. Cars looked great back when there were no screens, right?
This 1968 Ford Galaxie 500 XL has been recently painted and is sporting a very shiny orange paint finish that looks great. The car rides on classic 5-spoke wheels and has the usual chrome trim. There’s no word on whether it’s been restored, but we suspect it was recently restored. Either it wasn’t, or the owner didn’t spare a penny on maintenance.
The mileage suggests it has likely been restored. This classic car had 26,703 miles (42,974 km) on the clock at the time of cataloging, so it still has a long way to go. You can find this Ford Galaxie on the Garage Kept Motors website here, but don’t click on the link just yet, as the price is still unknown. The asking price at the time of writing is $27,900, some $4,000 less than the MSRP of a brand new Mustang EcoBoost (2.3L). So, could this be your next used car?
