Right next to the building, FEMA has set up a temporary field office where Wilkes County residents can apply for assistance. It can be daunting and confusing at times, but we hope to shed some light on it and clarify some things on your recovery journey. Scrupe said the next step in the FEMA response in Wilkes County is to establish a one-stop-shop disaster recovery center. Mitigation experts will be established there to advise people on how to rebuild sustainably for future storms, and FEMA will assist with storm damage for a variety of reasons, from evacuations to home repairs to vehicle damage. A team from the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office returned home this afternoon after spending a week in Buncombe County on Helen relief efforts. Eight leaders were dispatched, including Sheriff Sam Page. During that time, we’re told they assisted in search and rescue efforts, helped deliver supplies, and even recorded the damage they encountered along the way. Students and faculty at App State University in Boone are back in the classroom. Classes resumed at the university this morning, nearly three weeks after Helen reopened campus on Friday. UNC Asheville students currently reside at Triad University. High Point University hosts UNC Asheville’s men’s and women’s tennis teams on campus. The team will also be using HPU’s practice facilities while away from the dorms due to Helen. And the students said it made a difficult time a little easier. It was chaotic and we were thrown into a situation we had never been in before. And you have no idea what it is or what will happen. Having other support staff suddenly available to help you, such as your new support staff, means a lot in itself.
