The China-made VW Tayron L is essentially a 2025 Tiguan for the North American market.
Revealed at China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the VW Tayron L is effectively a teaser for the US-spec Tiguan. The SUV is 133mm (5.2 inches) longer than the European Tiguan and boasts different styling. The North American-spec 2025 VW Tiguan is confirmed to debut later this year.
The new 2025 VW Tiguan will feature a different design than the European model and is set to debut in the US market before the end of the year. After a slew of spy shots, we now have official photos of the China-spec VW Tayron L, which is expected to be identical to the US-spec Tiguan, but that could be confusing.
The compact SUV, which will be produced by the FAW-VW joint venture, doesn’t share any body panels with the recently launched European Tiguan, despite similar styling cues: instead, the Tayron L and North American Tiguan adopt more of the VW ID family’s design elements, including a clamshell hood and full-width LEDs at both ends.

The R-Line trim ups the sporty appeal with aggressive bumpers with faux vents, plenty of gloss black trim, and flashy 20-inch alloy wheels.
In terms of footprint, the VW Tayron L in China is 4,684 mm (184.4 in) long, 1,854 mm (73 in) wide, 1,685 mm (66.3 in) tall and has a wheelbase of 2,791 mm (109.9 in). The R-Line trim stretches its height slightly to 4,695 mm (184.8 in) thanks to its unique bumper.
Overall, the Tyrone L is 133 mm (5.2 inches) longer than the EU-spec Tiguan, but 51 mm (2 inches) shorter than the Chinese-market Tiguan L. All the aforementioned SUVs use the latest MQB Evo architecture, which matches the majority of VW Group’s ICE-powered models, including the new Passat.

According to a filing with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the VW Tayron L will offer three turbocharged petrol engines on the domestic market: an entry-level 1.5-liter unit producing 158 hp (118 kW / 160 PS), while a more powerful 2.0-liter will be available in configurations producing 184 hp (137 kW / 186 PS) or 217 hp (162 kW / 220 PS).
The US-spec 2025 VW Tiguan is expected to feature a more efficient mild-hybrid turbo 2.0-liter engine and may be joined by a plug-in hybrid version. In Europe, the VW Tiguan eHybrid will produce up to 268 horsepower (200 kW / 272 PS), be powered by a 19.7 kWh battery pack and boast an electric-only range of 62 miles (100 km).
The new Tiguan’s official North American debut is expected in the coming months, and interestingly, rumors suggest that the Tyrone L will also arrive in the European market as a seven-seater SUV, potentially replacing the Tiguan Allspace and positioned above the regular Tiguan.
