When you put Moncler and Jony Ive, the bonafide Apple designer legend and co-founder of the “creative collective” LoveFrom, in the same room, what else could you expect other than some ridiculously stylish outerwear? Because that’s what the LoveFrom, Moncler collection is all about, and it’s no exaggeration to say it’s Apple outerwear.
First worn by Miami Dolphins’ Odell Beckham Jr. on September 22nd, Moncler’s LoveFrom line is as sexy as it sounds. Not bad for Ive’s first outerwear design. I got one!
Ive’s succinct “LoveFrom, Moncler” collection features a few smart layered pieces in great iMac-esque pastel colors, all so well thought out that on the surface it appears very simple.
These three layering pieces were literally engineered from the fabric up. Shaped from recycled, yarn-dyed, loom-woven nylon developed exclusively for LoveFrom, the field jacket, vest and poncho are constructed without seams, resulting in a pure drape that’s a feat of engineering to say the least.
Each garment is made for the same seamless layering, with one piece stacking neatly on top of the other to form a weatherproof shell, yet every piece is subtly stylish enough to be worn on its own.
But perhaps the most interesting detail about this collection lies on the surface.
See that little silver button? It’s a testament to Ive’s unique, hands-on approach to design. This is the man behind the iPod and its incomparable click wheel. Remember,
The “Duo” button is made of four metal pieces and a magnet, allowing garments to slide easily over one another.
It’s the culmination of months of experimentation by Ive, as LoveFrom not only “designed and engineered a series of new processes and machines” to create this little miracle, but also to search for just the right blend and shape to produce what Moncler’s press release describes as “that satisfying ‘click.'”
Because no one knows this better than Ive (except maybe Dieter Rams), because a gadget is made or broken by its tiniest details.
“For me, who I work with has become less important than what I work on,” Ive said in a statement. “We have learned so much from each other, and I’m especially pleased that this modest collection marks the start of a long-term collaboration.”
So expect to see more original outerwear from Ive and Moncler in the future, as he literally wrote the book on Apple design.
