Apple is reportedly developing a device that combines an iPad-like display with a robotic arm that could perform tasks such as adjusting to face the user during video calls.
It’s one of several projects the tech giant is working on as it aims to develop new products, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday (August 14), citing anonymous sources.
Apple did not immediately respond to PYMNTS’ request for comment.
Development of the tabletop device, codenamed J595, has accelerated in recent months after it was approved for use in 2022, according to the report.
Apple envisions the device as a tool for tasks related to smart home management, video conferencing and home security, and expects it to be controlled by its Siri digital assistant and Apple Intelligence artificial intelligence (AI) service, with the company reportedly aiming to launch it by 2026 or 2027 for around $1,000.
According to reports, hundreds of people are currently working on the project.
The project has reportedly met with mixed reactions from across Apple, but CEO Tim Cook is seen as a supporter of the effort.
In addition to this device, Apple is also reportedly working on mobile robots for use in the home, camera-equipped AirPods earbuds and a giant foldable iPad. The company is also considering developing smart glasses and augmented reality glasses.
Apple canceled its decade-long, multibillion-dollar electric vehicle development plan in February and moved many members of its automotive team to its AI team.
Senior executives decided to scale back the project due to concerns about profitability and the large investment required for the project.
The company continues to invest heavily in research and development in other areas, including plans to integrate generative AI across its product lines.
As PYMNTS reported, Apple’s AI features will take time to roll out and won’t be included in the initial release of new iPhone and iPad software updates.
Cook said during the earnings call on August 1 that Apple is integrating ChatGPT into its iPhone, Mac and iPad experiences and that the AI has “extraordinary potential,” adding that Apple Intelligence will be a “compelling” reason to upgrade hardware.
