Tributes have poured in for US rapper Rich Homie Quan after his death was confirmed by authorities on Thursday.
The Fulton County coroner said the artist, who was in his early 30s, died in Atlanta, Georgia.
The cause of death is unknown, but local medical authorities said an autopsy was scheduled for Friday.
Rich Homie Quan (real name Dequantes Devontay Lamar) is one of Atlanta’s most well-known contemporary rappers.
He rose to prominence in the rap world in the mid-2010s, achieving mainstream success with his 2013 hit “Type of Way,” and releasing the popular song “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” in 2015.
He has been nominated multiple times for the BET and BET Hip Hop Awards, including Best New Artist and People’s Champ Award.
He has also collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry, including 2 Chainz, Young Thug, Gucci Mane and Trinidad James.
According to Atlanta music venue Masquerade, Rich Homie Quan was born in October 1989, was the oldest of three children and grew up in a single-parent home, initially dreaming of becoming a baseball player but eventually pursued a career in music.
He has spoken candidly about his childhood in various interviews, and in 2011 he served 15 months in prison for his role in a series of thefts.
After getting out of prison, he turned to music and became a big name in the rap world by the mid-2010s.
Tributes have been pouring in for the artist from across the rap world since his death was announced.
Singer Jax was one of the first to offer his condolences, “Rest in peace my brother Rich Homie Quan,” he said in an X. In a later post, he called the rapper a “legend” and added, “Love you forever.”
2 Chainz posted a tribute on Instagram, saying, “Dude, I was just talking to you about the video shoot. Special prayers for you and your family. And prayers for everyone that’s going through anything. My condolences brother.”
Rapper Quavo also took to Instagram, writing “God be with us. Never imagined this would be part of our journey” above a photo of himself, Rich Homie Quan and several other artists.
Alex Twomey, a long-time engineer who worked with Quan, said of the artist, “One of the nicest people I’ve ever worked with and a true artist. Really sad news. Rest in peace.”
