A luxury Italian fashion house has released a high-end version of a kids’ DIY craze from 20 years ago, and millennials are going crazy.
Miu Miu has released a $700 leather trick keychain that resembles an elegant version of the colorful braided Scooby-Doo keychains that every kid wore in the 2000s.
Satirical Instagram account “missdoublebay” posted an image of the luxury leather accessories online, writing: “Evil never dies, it’s reborn.”
“Will the humble Scooby-Doo ever be resurrected?” she asked.
Fans of braided keychains (also known as gimps, boondoggles or flubbedoos, depending on where in the world you grew up) remember the trend fondly.
Scooby-Doo is based on the traditional French “scoubidous,” knotted cloth strings that first became popular in the 1950s.
Modern keychains come in bright neon colors and were the definitive fashion accessory for cool kids who made them themselves or got help from their parents.
“It was a huge hit with Dutch kids in the 2000s! Everyone at my school had it,” said one nostalgic fan.
Scooby-Doo was a hit in the early 2000s, and kids all over the world called it many different names but fondly remember it as a schoolyard fad.
Italian fashion house Miu Miu recently released a $700 leather trick that looks just like the original Scooby-Doo.
Satirical Instagram account missdoublebay gave their followers loads of laughs with an image of the original Scooby and some high-end designer keychains.
Miu Miu’s Leather Trick is designed as a unique bag charm and has been described as “playful and sophisticated” by one fashion fan.
While some nostalgic Australians “welcomed” the trend’s return, others struggled to take Miu Miu’s pricey version seriously.
“Give me five,” one woman joked.
“Me too,” added another.
“Your father could have made a lot of money,” someone interjected.
Especially in the current economic climate, people thought it best to skip the designer versions and just make it themselves.
“Honestly, if you’re that desperate, just buy a box of Scoobies and knit like this and save yourself $700,” one woman said.
One Australian thought the return of the keychain was at least a trend that applies to everyone.
“I prefer this comeback to capri pants,” she joked.
