The previous YSR Congress governments, which came to power with granting special category status to AP as one of their key promises, did not take unified action on this front. Despite winning 22 seats in 2019, the YCP limited its efforts to occasionally wooing the SCS in the Assembly and that was it.
As things stand, Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP is running things effectively for Andhra Pradesh. This can be understood by looking at today’s Union Budget announcements, which have huge implications for Andhra Pradesh.
The most significant budgetary allocation by the central government is the allocation of Rs 15,000 crore for Amaravati Construction through multiple agencies, which will be a major boost towards the development of social infrastructure in the Amaravati region of the national capital.
Not only that, there are also several other grants to APs in this crucial budget session.
The guarantees that states receive in the central budget include:
15,000 crores of financial assistance for the development of Andhra Pradesh, additional funds for the completion of Polavaram which is the lifeline of the state, special packages for Rayalaseema, Prakasam and Uttarandhra districts, development of the Hyderabad-Bangalore Industrial Corridor for industrial development, special assistance to hubs of the Visakhapatnam-Chennai Industrial Corridor, development of Kopparthi and Oruvakalur industrial centres, funding for Kopparthi on the Visakha-Chennai Corridor and Oruvakalur on the Hyderabad-Bangalore Corridor, special funds for water, power, rail and road projects, enforcement of guarantees contained in the Reorganisation Act, special projects for Andhra Pradesh under the Purvodaya Scheme.
Keeping this in mind, it is easy to understand that Chandrababu’s TDP, which won 16 seats, is far stronger and many times more beneficial for Andhra Pradesh than the YCP, which won 22 seats in 2019. This can be understood looking at the fact that the Rs 15,000 crore package for the development of AP’s capital city is the largest allocation in the last five years.
Chief Minister Naidu has always placed the interest of the state above all else and has not put much emphasis on allocating ministerial posts in the recent past. His aim always seems to have been to secure a financial package for the rehabilitation of Andhra Pradesh, which is currently benefiting the state immensely.
