Balenciaga continues to shock and delight with its extreme take on the classic dad shoe.
From 10-story high sneakers to spiked ski shoes, this brand knows how to make a statement. And somehow they continue to push the boundaries of weird sneakers even further – introducing the Balenciaga Reptile Sneaker.
A combination of bizarre designs, the Reptile is an odd-looking shoe. Even by Balenciaga standards. Here’s what you can imagine if Y2K Asics running shoes and super pointy dress shoes had a love child.
Unsurprisingly, when this reptile was first shown online, people were quick to comment on its unique structure (“These are the shoes the Wicked Witch of the East wore when she was crushed in her house by Dorothy”) ” was the highlight of the online comments section). But now you can also buy sneakers, and things have gotten even wilder.
Available on Balenciaga’s website, the shoe slipped online in an all-black build or a gray option with multicolored panels. The pointy dad shoes cost $1,890.
It’s not uncommon to see four-figure price tags on Balenciaga shoes, and all luxury brands cost a pretty penny. However, this shoe ranks at the top of the list of Balenciaga’s most expensive sneakers, second only to the rhinestone-encrusted Triple S.
I can appreciate the novelty of quirky sneakers as much as any guy, but nearly $2,000 is a lot for a shoe made of polyurethane and polyester.
While I’m sure there are Balenciaga fans and quirky dressers out there who would splurge on a pair of one-of-a-kind dad shoes, I stick to something a little more traditional (and cheaper).
