Oliver Barker-Volmawer, Democracy Hub’s lead chairman, fell ill while in police custody and was admitted to the police hospital.
According to a statement signed by Democracy Hub, Mr. Barker-Volmawar was taken to the hospital in the early morning hours of Thursday, October 10, 2024, due to serious health concerns.
The statement further said medical tests are being conducted to assess his condition and determine if further hospitalization is required.
“Democracy Hub is very sorry to report that our convener, activist Oliver Barker Vollmawer, was rushed to the police hospital early this morning due to serious health concerns. Oliver is one of 53 activists who were unjustly detained during the #StopGalamsey and #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests on September 21, 2024, and remains in police custody.
“Medical professionals are currently assessing his condition and conducting tests to determine if he requires hospitalization. Mr. Oliver’s health has been declining since he was illegally detained by the Ghana Police on September 23, 2024. “This is the second time this has worsened,” the statement said.
Democracy Hub expressed concern for Barker Vollmawer’s well-being and urged the public to keep him in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
“We call on the public to keep Oliver in their thoughts and prayers during this critical time and to be patient as we await further details regarding his condition.”
Oliver Barker Vollmawah was denied bail on October 7, 2024 by the Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Comfort Tassaim. The judge cited the need for further investigation and concerns about the potential for social disorder if released.
Barker-Volmawer is currently on trial for treason, and the court said he is not eligible for bail on other charges.
He was arrested along with 53 other activists and charged with unlawful assembly, unlawful damage, assault on a public servant, and offensive conduct leading to a breach of the peace. These charges stem from the #StopGalamsey protests that took place on September 21 and 22, 2024 at 37 intersection in Accra.
