Kingston, Jamaica — Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett expressed deep sadness over the passing of U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee.
Congressman Jackson Lee, who served Texas’ 18th Congressional District since 1995, has passed away at the age of 74 after a courageous battle with cancer.
In a statement issued on Saturday following her passing, Mr Bartlett paid tribute to her great friendship and unwavering support to Jamaica over the years.
“Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee was not only a brilliant leader for the United States, but also a true friend of Jamaica. Her strong and unwavering support for our country is deeply valued and her contributions have left an indelible mark on her people and the nation,” Mr Bartlett said.
He added, “Her work to advocate for civil rights, racial justice, and especially the human rights of women and children has been exemplary. She has fought courageously on local, national, and international fronts, making great strides in the pursuit of justice and equality. Her efforts to pass important legislation, such as the Juneteenth Independence Day Act and the George Floyd Law Enforcement Trust and Integrity Act, have reinforced her legacy as a champion of civil rights.”
Bartlett said Jackson Lee’s death is a great loss not only to the people of Texas and the United States, but also to people around the world who were inspired by her tireless work and dedication.
“Her incredible contributions to the United States and her heartfelt ties to Jamaica will be remembered with deep gratitude and respect. We offer our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” he said.
“We mourn her passing and celebrate the life of an incredible woman whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” Bartlett added.
