Singer Bebe Rexha said she was threatened and subjected to “psychological abuse” by airport staff because she is Albanian.
The 34-year-old woman posted a tearful video on Instagram, saying she was “threatened because the security guard thought I was Albanian.”
“I asked him in Albanian where I could buy a ticket, but he is trying to throw me off the plane.”
It is unclear whether the US-born star, whose family is of Albanian descent, was allowed to board the flight from Munich airport.
In a post to her 12 million followers on Saturday, she said she believed the incident was a “hate crime” because of her ethnicity.
Rexha claimed that the male staff member, who she refused to give her name, “continued to mentally abuse me” but that the female staff members did not intervene.
The star, who has performed alongside Rita Ora and Louis Tomlinson and previously hit No. 1 in the UK with David Guetta’s “I’m Good (Blue)”, said he believes the man works for a company that provides services to Lufthansa.
The German airline said it sought to “understand the situation” and that it “does not tolerate discriminatory behaviour of any kind.”
“We have reached out to Bebe Rexha and are in direct contact with her to understand the situation,” the spokesperson said.
“As an international airline, we connect people and countries around the world. Our customers and employees come from all over the world,” the spokesperson added.
“Diversity and equal opportunity are core values of our company and corporate culture.
“We do not tolerate discriminatory behavior of any kind.”
