A representative for Beyonce said the singer will not attend the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
“Beyoncé was not scheduled to be there,” a rep for the Grammy-winning star told The Hollywood Reporter. “The reports of a performance are unfounded.”
Rumours exploded online this week that the pop star would attend and perform at this year’s Democratic National Convention, which celebrates Vice President Kamala Harris’ historic presidential nomination.
On Wednesday, it was reported that Pink would be headlining ahead of Harris’ speech, and on Thursday, the singer appeared to have moved up the lineup after performing “What About Us” with her daughter Willow, sparking rumors of a surprise guest appearing later in the night.
Beyoncé’s presence was also felt at Chicago’s United Center arena, where her song “Freedom” was played on and off stage during Harris’ speech as she formally accepted the party’s nomination late Thursday. The superstar singer quickly gave Harris permission to use the song from her 2016 Lemonade in her presidential campaign. “Freedom” has since become the campaign’s theme song and is featured in a new ad for Harris and Waltz that kicked off the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
This year’s Democratic National Convention was hosted by Tony Goldwyn, Ana Navarro, Mindy Kaling, and Kerry Washington, with each star hosting one night of the event. The four-day convention featured a variety of events, including performances by famous musicians such as Stevie Wonder, John Legend, and Patti LaBelle, surprise appearances by Oprah Winfrey, who spoke to registered independents like herself to get out and vote, and a daytime panel moderated by Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
On the third night, Legend and Sheila E. performed Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” and paid tribute to Minnesota, the home state of vice presidential candidate Tim Waltz, who was born in Minneapolis.
Wonder made a surprise appearance in Chicago on Wednesday to perform his hit “Higher Ground.” “This is a moment we must remember — a time to tell our children where we’ve been and what we’ve done. As we stand between the pain of history and the promise of tomorrow, we must choose courage over complacency. It’s time to stand up and vote,” Wonder told the crowd.
The Republican National Convention in July attracted celebrities such as Hulk Hogan, Kid Rock and Amber Rose.
Updated August 22nd at 8:30pm to add “Freedom” which Harris will perform as she leaves the stage at the Democratic National Convention.
