Blake Lively may have had to settle for second place over the weekend behind her husband’s Deadpool & Wolverine film, as It Ends With Us debuted with $50 million in its third weekend as an MCU film, but she led the way at the box office on Monday and Tuesday.
The Sony/Wayfarer Studios romantic drama, directed by and starring Justin Baldoni, earned $6.2 million today and is estimated to bring in another $7.6 million. Sources say Deadpool & Wolverine is on track to gross $7 million on its third Tuesday.
The film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel has now grossed $63.8 million. Marvel Studios’ D&W passed the $500 million mark tonight with $506.7 million. The film, directed, produced and co-written by Shawn Levy, grossed $5.85 million on Monday.
Even though Disney & Walt Disney are likely to do well again this weekend in the $30 million range and Disney/20th Century Studios’ Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus could challenge for the #1 spot with $40 million, It Ends With Us is expected to do well in the -55% to -60% range, for around $20 million to $21 million. Don’t be surprised if it does even better.
In terms of domestic opening weekend, It Ends With Us was Lively’s second-highest-grossing film of her career, trailing only her 2011 Warner Bros./DC film The Green Lantern (with Reynolds), which grossed $53.1 million.
One of Lively’s next roles will see her reteaming with Paul Feig in Prime Video’s A Simple Favor 2. The first film, starring her alongside Anna Kendrick, was released in theaters and grossed nearly $100 million worldwide. Feig said on Crew Call that he just had a great preview screening and that he hopes Prime Video, which has been aggressive with theaters lately, will release the sequel in theaters. Why not? Lively is pretty popular right now, and her 50+ million social media followers are hard to ignore. That alone is enough to draw crowds to the cinemas.
