NEW YORK (AP) — Fashion can involve risks, but designer Michael Kors says some of them are negligible. His show last September was held outdoors, and because of poor weather, he postponed his spring/summer 2025 collection. New York Fashion Week Instead, they will bring nature indoors.
Kors and his team created a unique runway in a huge undeveloped space in a Midtown building, with rectangular walls lined with metal benches and huge man-made black boulders scattered in the middle and on the sides to mimic the rocky beaches of the Amalfi Coast. The drama of Italian cliffs in an urban landscape was part of Kors’ abstract inspiration.
Kolls is “obsessed” with pop culture, especially the latest Netflix series “The Talented Mr. Ripley” Based on Patricia Highsmith’s classic novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley, this dark tale is set along the Italian coastline and tells the story of a man who covets his friend’s wealthy lifestyle, so he murders him, assumes his friend’s identity, and kills anyone who threatens his friend’s new persona.
“Seeing this romantic, brooding, dark story shot in black and white, I thought it brought something very different to romance,” Kors told The Associated Press backstage before the show. “It had a darker side to romance that wasn’t sweet, savory or mysterious. Plus, this year marks my 35th anniversary of working with Italian artisans, so I really wanted to promote all of Italy’s amazing tailors and artisans.”
As a result, the show used harsh lighting, haunting instrumental music and a heavy use of black and white, muted colours that evoked Ripley’s 1950s urban-resort hybrid style.
“It’s got a lot of texture, black raffia, white embroidery. It’s all very tactile,” Kors explained. “The colors are all ones you’d find in the Mediterranean, so there’s all the natural colors, very soft browns and creams, and then, of course, there’s blue.”
The brand’s craftsmanship was on display with dresses and skirts made from intricate peekaboo lace, and dresses, skirts and coats adorned with floral appliqués. The collection featured a wealth of accessories made from black raffia, which resembled leather straw, including leather handbags, hats and shoes. Nearly every look featured a belt; some were loose and long, tied and dangling, others wide and tight at the waist. Trench coats for both men and women were a constant on the runway, most of them oversized and loose.
