KNOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WEIMAR) – Knott County Superintendent of Schools Brent Huber announced his retirement on Tuesday. The Eastern Kentucky native will step down from his position on Oct. 1.
Mr. Huber’s career in education spans more than 25 years.
“I have spent my entire teaching career here and have enjoyed working with the students of Knott County,” Hoover said. “Knott County is near and dear to my heart.”
He said the July 2022 floods marked a turning point in his confidence as a district leader.
“With three weeks to go before school started, three schools were literally demolished and we had to make decisions quickly. Big decisions, big financial commitments, we had to make early on,” Huber explained.
He said he came to feel the time was right for him to step down and let someone else lead Knott.
Huber wants to remind educators to always do what’s best for their students when it comes to decision-making.
“I think the most important thing is to put the kids first, but always stay optimistic and remember that they are someone’s babies and we are entrusted with them and we have to take good care of them while we have them,” he said.
At this point, Huber said he has other interests he would like to pursue, including the possibility of a second career.
Huber sent a statement to WYMT regarding his retirement.
“To our Knott County School Community,
I am writing to inform you that after much consideration, I have decided to step down as Knott County Schools Superintendent. This is an extremely personal and emotional decision for me, as I have dedicated my entire 29-year career to serving the students, families and staff of this great school district.
I began my career in Knott County Schools as a student where I first developed a deep understanding of the value of education and community. As a proud graduate of Knott County Central High School, I am eager to return to Knott County Schools as a teacher and make a difference in the lives of young people. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to serve in a variety of administrative roles, each with their own unique challenges and rewards. These experiences have culminated in the role of Superintendent, where I have the opportunity to work with some of the most dedicated and passionate educators and staff I have ever known.
It has been an honor to contribute to the education and growth of our students, witness their successes, and share in the many milestones our district has achieved together. While the decision to retire is bittersweet, I take solace in knowing that our united commitment to education will continue to thrive for years to come. I want to express my sincere gratitude to the entire Knott County Schools community – students, parents, teachers, staff and community members. Your support, collaboration and dedication have made my years here truly fulfilling. I am confident that the future of the district is great, and I look forward to seeing the great accomplishments that lie ahead.
As I embark on this new chapter in my life, I carry with me cherished memories and the confidence that our school district will continue to be a beacon of learning and opportunity for all who pass through it.
Thank you for the opportunity to contribute to this community that I care about so much.
With sincere gratitude,
