Bret Hart named two of his favorite matches of his career, describing one of them as “beautiful.”
Picking a wrestler’s best match can be difficult, especially when they have the legend and fame that Bret Hart has, but the Hitman recently narrowed it down to two matches that he considers his favorites from his illustrious career.
During an interview on the Attitude Era podcast, Bret Hart reflected on his feud with Stone Cold Steve Austin in 1997, which culminated in a No Disqualification Submission Match at WrestleMania 13, which Hart described as “the greatest match I’ve ever fought.”
Steve (Austin) was one of my favorite guys that I worked with. He was a really good wrestler. Steve would have been a great wrestler without me. I don’t want to say that he wasn’t the man he was without me. But I’m pretty sure that the match that he and I had was the best match he’s ever had. The best match…the best match I’ve ever had.
If you look at the match and how it’s put together and all the little layers… it has the most layers. I mean, it’s a match where you can’t predict what’s going to happen. It’s like you sit back and say, they’re going to do this. If it’s a Ric Flair match, you can sit there and say, “Okay, he’s going to drop a beat…” You can see the whole thing. But, I mean, in that match, nobody knows what’s going to happen. That’s what I love about it.
Bret Hart cited his 1996 Iron Man match against Shawn Michaels as another of his favorite matches. Although Hart ultimately lost the WWF Championship to Michaels at WrestleMania XII the previous year, he said the outcome was “irrelevant” given how “beautiful” their match was.
WrestleMania 13 was my favorite match because it was so special. But the Iron Man match is a close second. Those two matches are the best matches I’ve ever been to. It doesn’t matter the outcome of WrestleMania 12 or that Shawn didn’t defend the title. The matches themselves were just amazing. They were the hardest matches I’ve ever been to. They were the matches I had to work the hardest and think the most about. In my career, those two matches stand out. I’d love to see someone else do a better Iron Man match someday.
Bret Hart reveals his true feelings about Vince McMahon: “Rot in hell”
In a later interview with Attitude Era, Hart was asked about his feelings towards Vince McMahon, and the Hitman didn’t mince words, describing the joy he felt when he landed a “beautiful uppercut” on McMahon backstage after the infamous Montreal Screwjob in 1997, and saying he felt McMahon deserved to “rot in hell.”
