Shane Lowry shot a 69 just before extremely tough conditions on the second day of the 152nd British Open to put him in the lead heading into the third round.
Britain’s Daniel Brown had a surprising opening day performance, finishing tied for the lead with Shane Lowry on the opening day of a major tournament, but the Irishman opened up a two-stroke lead to finish the day in first place.
Joining them at the top of the leaderboard is Justin Rose, who calmly weathered tough conditions to card a 68 and stay five under par heading into the weekend with a chance to win, along with Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay and Jon Rahm.
But strong winds caused misfortune for some players, as Tiger Woods tied his worst second-round score at a major championship and Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau both missed the cut.

On the 17th hole, Homa hit a monster putt from deep for par, but fell just short and made a bogey to finish at +4.
On the 13th hole, MacIntyre found the green in regulation and had a golden chance for birdie, but misjudged and had to make par. His tee shot on the par-3 14th narrowly avoided rolling off the back of the green, but it looked like he’d have to make par again.
John Catlin has been working his way up the leaderboard and was in par when he teed off at Post Stump, and although he ended up in a bunker, he made a great shot to ensure he was in par and would remain at 4 under for the day.
I didn’t make a good birdie putt on the 16th hole and remained at +2.
One of the surprises today has been the performance of amateur Jacob Skov-Olsen, who has improved to +3 and has now played 32 holes without a bogey.

A great chip out of the bunker gave Thomas a birdie chance on the fifth hole, which he easily converted to move to +2.
On the 12th hole, MacIntyre hits his approach shot lying in the rough but it goes straight into a greenside bunker. He needs a little more effort to make par, but a great chip-out creates an up-and-down opportunity that MacIntyre takes, still three over par.
Matteo Manassero has only played four holes today but is three under par and could come out of nowhere and put himself in the red.
Now at +5 after consecutive bogeys, Herman nearly sank an eagle putt on the sixth but missed it wide, but he made a birdie to move up to +4.
Sharma’s double bogey on the 15th hole dropped him to +4.

McIntyre hit his second shot out of the rough on the 11th hole, but overshot it and went over the green. He needed to get up and down to save par, but he couldn’t, and he ended up with consecutive bogeys at +5.
Im got out of the sand on the 14th hole, Sharma hit a birdie putt short, and the Korean couldn’t sink his par putt, leaving him tied with his fellow player at +2.
Thomas made par again on the third hole, his tee shot flying down the fairway.
Going down the course to the 10th hole, Adam Scott narrowly missed another birdie chance and remains at +1. Will he be the first to reach par today?
On the 15th hole, Homa had a birdie chance to get closer to +2, but missed the birdie.

On the tenth hole, McIntyre chose to putt and was lying just off the green, which was quite short but should have led to a par shot, but he missed and the Scottish Open champion was left with a score of +4. He will be very disappointed with this result.
He approached the tee of the Railway’s 11th hole against a gentle wind, but landed in the crowd not far from the tracks.
Adam Scott missed a birdie on the eighth hole and looked close to par, but he had started the day well.
Lim and Sharma looked to continue their morning form on the 13th hole, with Sharma finishing with a beautiful birdie to move to +2 and 4 under for the day.
Thomas, two strokes back, grazed his birdie putt, and the American showed no joy for now, remaining at four over par.

McIntyre’s approach on the ninth hole went over the pin and landed on the far edge of the first cut, where it was highly unlikely he would earn a shot and he missed his birdie putt, but would tap in for par.
On the 12th hole, Im chipped onto the green and landed nicely, giving him another chance for birdie, but the ball missed and he remains 1 over for now. It was so close.
Thomas missed his birdie putt by inches on the first hole and would start the day with a par.
Adam Scott makes a birdie and is +1.

Fitzpatrick missed par on the ninth hole and is six over par heading into the back nine, so there’s no chance for him today.
On the eighth hole, McIntyre had another chance for birdie, but his ball just missed the hole, which was very unlucky, but on the ninth hole his tee shot landed level with the fairway bunker, which was good.
On the 11th hole, both Im and playing partner Sharma had another chance for birdie, but neither could convert it.
Herman can only get a par on the first hole, but has a chance for birdie on the second hole…
Justin Thomas will be teeing off soon looking to improve on a terrible Day 2 that saw him drop from -3 to +4.

Rickie Fowler gets his first birdie of the day and moves to +5, I’m going for my sixth birdie of the day but my putt was a few inches too short so I’m still at +1.
Adam Scott got another early birdie to move to +2.
Herman, the defending champion, teed off and started off with a shot that flew straight down the middle of the fairway.
At the 11th hole, Railway, Homa teed off and guided his ball down the middle, avoiding the train tracks.
McIntyre got on the green in regulation on the seventh hole for a chance at birdie, but it was long and his ball went wide. His score will remain at +3.

Fitzpatrick missed a birdie chance with a left-to-right misjudgment, but made par on the eighth hole.
Im continued his fun morning with his fifth birdie of the day, moving him to +1 and, if he continues in this form, he could be in contention for the win.
