WASHINGTON (AP) – Alex Ovechkin scored his second goal in the Washington Capitals’ game against the Las Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night, becoming the 60th player in NHL history to record 700 career assists.
Ovechkin assisted on Tom Wilson’s power-play goal early in the second period and set up linemate Aliaksey Protas to make it 3-1 minutes later. During the ensuing timeout, a video montage of his assist was played on the arena’s video board, and Ovechkin waved to the fans who gave him a standing ovation.
Ovechkin, who ranks second in points with 853, has three assists in the first two games of the season. The 39-year-old winger is 42 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record, which had long seemed elusive.
