John Galliano took the helm at Maison Margiela in 2014, but perhaps the brand’s most talked-about move came a decade later.
The theatrical Spring 2024 haute couture presentation, held in a replica jazz-era Parisian dive bar, recalled the work of legendary French painter Toulouse-Lautrec, writes WWD’s Miles Socha. “Every outfit was a marvel of imagination and craftsmanship, and by the time actress Gwendoline Christie finished the show in a quirky fit-and-flare latex dress, photographers were shouting ‘Bravo!’ and director Baz Luhrmann was stomping his foot in delight in the audience.”
Galliano’s latest show also sparked social media buzz, with fashion and beauty experts wondering how makeup artist Pat McGrath managed to create the “porcelain doll” look on his models. Just a month later, Marigiela’s Spring 2024 Haute Couture made its way onto the red carpet, garnering A-list fans like Anya Taylor-Joy, Hunter Schafer, and Ariana Grande. Here’s how some of the stars styled Galliano’s buzzworthy designs.
Anya Taylor-Joy
At the New York premiere of Dune Part 2, Anya Taylor-Joy channeled the film’s dystopian setting in a shimmery gold dress that featured a sheer overlay, bandeau skirt, and halter neck. The actress was styled by Ryan Hastings, known for his work with Natalie Portman and Ryan Gosling.
Hunter Schafer
Hunter Schafer attended the premiere of her film “A Different Man” at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival in a grey off-the-shoulder cardigan paired with a fringed maxi skirt. She accessorized with the same suede Tabi pumps she wore on the runway, which are part of Margiela’s collaboration with Christian Louboutin. Schafer’s outfit was designed by stylist Dara Allen.
Kendall Jenner
Kendall Jenner showed off another see-through dress from the collection at the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. The supermodel’s floor-length corset dress featured gradient lace. Jenner completed the look with crossover Tabi Louboutin heels and Lorraine Schwartz diamond pavé studs. Dani Michelle, stylist to Hailey Bieber and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, curated Jenner’s look.
Ariana Grande
During her performance at the 2024 Met Gala, Ariana Grande opted for a see-through shift dress and matching gloved bodysuit and corset. Like the runway look, the skirt, custom designed by Galliano, was lined with embroidered rosettes and ruffles, and the dress was made in green, a nod to “Wicked,” in which the singer stars.
Greta Gerwig
In May, “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig wore a striped dress from Margiela’s Spring 2024 Haute Couture collection at the Cannes Film Festival, where she served as a jury member. The filmmaker paired the blue-and-white midi dress with white Tabi platform heels. Karla Welch, the stylist whose clients include Kristen Wiig and Sarah Paulson, dressed Gerwig for the occasion.
