A representative for Canadian singer Celine Dion said Saturday that the use of her 1990s hit “My Heart Will Go On” at former President Donald Trump’s campaign rally was “unauthorized” and did not obtain her permission.
“Is that really the song?” Dion’s rep cheekily asked in a statement posted to the singer’s social media accounts.
A video clip of Dion singing the theme song to the 1997 film “Titanic” was shown at the rally Friday night. Bozeman, MontanaThe song has been played at several of Trump’s previous rallies.
In a statement, her management team and record company Sony Music Entertainment Canada “were made aware of the unauthorized use of a video, recording, musical performance and likeness of Celine Dion singing ‘My Heart Will Go On’ at the Donald Trump/J.D. Vance campaign rally in Montana on Saturday.”
The representative stressed that “such use is not authorized in any manner whatsoever, and Celine Dion does not endorse such or any similar use.”
Artists asking Republican presidential candidate Trump not to play their music at his rallies is not a new issue. To comply with copyright law, political campaigns must obtain public performance licenses from organizations such as Broadcast Music Inc. or the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
