MOSS POINT, Miss. (WLOX) – One of South Mississippi’s largest employers is looking to add more employees, not just to its own workforce.
On Monday afternoon, Chevron held its first ever Career Readiness Expo in Moss Point.
It’s part of a two-day event called Chevron’s “Champion Your Future,” designed to help job seekers write resumes, conduct mock interviews and learn about the Pascagoula refinery.
Gary Lee and his son Dallas were at the job fair looking for new job opportunities.
“We’re just trying to better ourselves,” Lee said. “We want to help this community a little bit more.”
Lee said he has worked at Ingalls for 15 years but is now looking for something new in the engineering field.
“I got a lot of information about what the Pascagoula refinery does and the people who work there,” he said.
They were amazed to see Chevron’s robotic dog use real-time data to optimize its working environment.
Daniel Tobias has worked at Chevron for 17 years and says it’s this kind of technology that improves the quality of engineers’ work.
“Every day it gets better and better,” Tobias said. “STEM is advancing rapidly and helping us do our jobs safer and more efficiently.”
The workshop will also help applicants apply for jobs outside of Chevron, said Tim Potter, director of Pascagoula Chevron Corp. He said applicants will be prepared for jobs in human resources and finance.
“Jackson County is a strong community with a lot of opportunity,” Potter said. “From people with high school diplomas and post-secondary education to people with doctorates, there are many different types of jobs.”
The Pascagoula refinery is one of the top ten largest refineries in the United States.
Chevron said it employs between 75 and 125 people a year, and Potter said that number could grow if the workshop is successful in the coming years.
“It looks like it’s off to a very strong start,” Potter said. “This program should really help people understand what jobs are out there and how they can best prepare to apply for and get hired for those jobs.”
