SANTA CLARA — Running back Christian McCaffrey is dealing with Achilles tendon issues in both legs, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Monday.
McCaffrey recently traveled to Germany to receive treatment for bilateral Achilles tendonitis.
“During that time, he was feeling pain in both (Achilles tendons),” Shanahan said on a conference call with reporters. “I think it started with one, but (then) he overcompensated with the other. Primarily, one or the other bothers him, but he’s troubled by both.”
After McCaffrey practiced for a week in training camp, manager Shanahan announced on August 6 that McCaffrey would be sidelined due to a calf condition.
A month later, McCaffrey returned to practice as the 49ers prepared to face the New York Jets in their season opener.
However, McCaffrey was declared inactive for the first game of the regular season. Over the next week, his condition worsened as he continued to practice.
The 49ers placed McCaffrey on injured reserve the night before their Week 2 game against the Minnesota Vikings.
He will not be eligible to return to action until after the 49ers’ next game against the Arizona Cardinals. But it’s unclear when McCaffrey will be able to return to the field.
During that time, McCaffrey traveled to Germany for treatment for tendonitis. He watched from the sideline Sunday as the 49ers got back on track with a 30-13 win over the New England Patriots at Levi’s Stadium.
Shanahan suggested last week that he believed the 49ers could begin more intensive training this week.
McCaffrey caught 67 passes for 564 yards and seven touchdowns last season, rushing for 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns, was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year and finished third in MVP voting. I’m about to finish.
