Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is being re-released to mark its 10th anniversary, but the sci-fi blockbuster will be returning to theaters a little later than expected.
The Paramount Pictures film was originally scheduled for release on September 27, but will now be released on December 6, about two months later. It will be screened in 70mm IMAX prints and on digital screens. A person familiar with the matter said the theatrical release date was pushed back to coincide with the return of home entertainment. Warner Bros. Pictures, which co-produced the film, is working with Paramount on the revival.
Studio insiders have disputed rumors that 70mm prints of “Interstellar” were destroyed — Paramount claims to keep more copies than most other movies — but reels of film wear out when played on the big screen, and they often become unusable after a theatrical release.
Interstellar premiered on November 5, 2014 and grossed a staggering $731 million at the box office worldwide. Starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Matt Damon, the film is set in a dystopian future where a group of astronauts travel to the edge of space to find a new planet for humanity to live on. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards and won for Best Visual Effects.
Nolan has long been a passionate supporter of film and IMAX. For his blockbuster Best Picture-winning film Oppenheimer, about the development of the atomic bomb, he encouraged audiences to watch the film in 70mm IMAX, which sold out for weeks. Director of The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and Tenet, Nolan is one of Hollywood’s most commercially successful directors. After multiple nominations, he recently won his first Oscar as director and producer of Oppenheimer.
