2024 NDC Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama
A member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Kwesi Botchwey Jr, has argued that former President John Dramani Mahama is a symbol of corruption and that electing him in 2024 would jeopardize Ghana’s development and progress.
“John Mahama is the epitome of corruption. His tenure as president was tainted with scandals and inefficiency that have left a permanent scar on our country,” Kwesi Botchwey said in a statement.
He reiterated his earlier assertion that electing an NDC representative would be bad for the country’s development and raised the issue of financial mismanagement and lack of accountability during the Mahama administration.
He argued that if Mahama wins the December 7 election, it will reverse the progress the country has made under the New Patriotic Party (NPP)-led government.
He believes that if Mr Mahama and the opposition NDC are given the chance to come to power again, they will run the country aground rather than continue from where the NPP left.
He stressed that the NPP is committed to sustaining the state’s current path of stability and progress.
He supported this assertion by highlighting the social intervention programmes undertaken by the NPP administration and pressuring the NDC to identify a single social intervention programme it has embarked on in the interest of the people.
“They claim to be socialist inclined but they cannot boast of having undertaken socially oriented development interventions during their time in governing the country. The NPP has served Ghana better than any NDC administration and this is because, unlike the NDC, they have initiated bold policies that serve the good people of this country,” he said.
“The NDC only knows how to criticise and when they come to power they either destroy policies or make them useless and unworkable,” he said.
He, therefore, prayed that voters would ignore the deceptive propaganda tactics being adopted by the NDC in the December 7 elections.
He further urged Mr Mahama to express regret to Ghanaians for past missteps, whose return to power he said has been characterised by subversion, opportunism and contradictory policies.
In a 2016 speech, Mahama argued that “four years is not enough for any president” and that the framers of the constitution allowed for a second term. Kwesi Botchwey Jr. emphasized this point.
He questioned why Mr Mahama chose to run again with only four years left in his term, suggesting that his re-election campaign was motivated by ego and ambition rather than a genuine desire to serve.
He maintained that Ghanaians are still suffering the effects of the economic hardships brought about by the previous Mahama administration.
“We have made great strides under this administration and Mr Bawumia’s leadership is crucial to continuing this progress. The choice is clear: to safeguard our future and sustain the gains we have made, we must support Dr Bawumia,” he stressed.
“Dr Bawumia is not just a leader, he is a visionary who has demonstrated exceptional ability and integrity,” Botchwey Jr. stressed.
