According to a detailed report from Did You Know Gaming (full video here), Toys for Bob was once developing Crash Bandicoot 5, which would have been a crossover game with Spyro the Dragon, but the project was ultimately scrapped.
A major draw for Crash Bandicoot 5 was the return of Crash Bandicoot: The Academy of Evil as the main setting, as well as the return of Uka-Uka, who appeared in the secret ending of Crash Bandicoot 4 and also appeared in Crash Bandicoot 3. Uka-Uka has access to an interdimensional portal that allows him to travel to Spyro’s universe and cast a spell on the Dragon Elders, plunging that world into chaos and threatening Crash’s homeworld. Crash Bandicoot 5 is considered to be slightly darker than its predecessors, both visually and in terms of storytelling, with a stronger focus on the series’ lore.
Crash and Coco go on an adventure across Spyro’s world to stop Uka Uka, and of course they meet Spyro himself and resurrect the Dragon Elder.
At the time, Toys for Bob was exploring various ideas for a Crash Bandicoot 5 x Spyro the Dragon crossover, including a return of the original Spyro’s realm influenced by Uka Uka’s magic, dragon feather collecting, the return of legacy Spyro characters such as Nooks, and the introduction of a gender-swapped alternate universe character similar to N. Tropy from Crash Bandicoot 4.
Besides Crash and Spyro, other playable characters considered for the game include Nina, Cortex, and Coco. Crash and Spyro could have been playable separately, but there was also discussion of using them together. There was also the idea of Crash riding on Spyro’s back.
Toys for Bob worked on Crash Bandicoot 5 for only about three to four months. The team was primarily focused on concept art and early demo environments at the time, all in pre-production between the summer and November of 2020. Unfortunately, Activision has since canceled Crash Bandicoot 5, in part because Crash Bandicoot 4 didn’t live up to the company’s high sales expectations and they moved away from big-budget single-player games.
