Torrie Horton played his final game with the Colorado State football program.
The senior wide receiver will undergo surgery on an injury sustained during the Rams’ 31-24 win over San Jose State last Saturday at Canvas Stadium, head coach Jay Norvell announced Monday night.
Coach Norvell did not specify the details of the surgery in his announcement, but Horton went down with a left knee injury in the first half of the game against SJSU. It was the latest in a series of setbacks that have sidelined Horton this season, starting with the Rams’ home opener against Northern Colorado.
Both Nobel and Horton issued statements as part of the announcement.
“Unfortunately, my season and college career are over, but this is not the end,” Horton said in a statement. “I will continue to be the best teammate and captain of this team and will do everything I can to make this a memorable season.”
Horton’s college career ends with him within striking distance of multiple career benchmarks in CSU and the Mountain West Conference. That leaves the Fresno, Calif., native 35 yards shy of the conference record for all-time receiving yards.
Despite missing multiple games, Horton led the Rams in receptions (26 yards) and receiving yards (353 yards) this season. Armani Winfield improved during his absence Saturday with six catches for 108 yards and one touchdown.
Horton briefly returned to the game in the second half, but was noticeably limp. He was ultimately ejected, and Norvell said after the game that Horton would undergo an MRI on his knee.
“His injury is season-ending, but he will make a full recovery and have a chance to advance to the next level in the National Football League,” Norvell said in a statement. “I am grateful for his loyalty to Conservative staff and his sacrifice and leadership for the CSU.”
The two-time captain led the Mountain West in receiving yards (1,131) as a junior in 2022 and in receiving yards (96) as a senior in 2023.
Horton, originally scouted by Norvell to Nevada, appeared in 21 games with the Wolfpack in 2020-2021, catching 72 passes for 995 yards and 17 touchdowns. After Norvell took over at CSU in December 2021, he followed the head coach to Fort Collins and appeared in 29 games over three seasons, recording 193 receptions for 2,620 yards and 17 touchdowns.
His final career spanned five seasons and more than 50 games, with 265 receptions, 3,615 yards, and 27 touchdowns.
“I will forever cherish my time playing for Colorado State University and wearing the green and gold uniform. I would like to thank my teammates, coaches, and fans for their love and support,” Horton said. spoke. “My goal is always to play on Sunday and I will make that happen.”
