Dan Aykroyd has officially given Saturday Night his stamp of approval.
The actor and original Saturday Night Live cast member took to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday to share the latest from director Jason Reitman, which centers around the 90 minutes leading up to the sketch comedy show’s 1975 premiere. He shared his thoughts on the work.
“A round of applause for director Jason Reitman’s triumphant SNL movie. Wow!” Aykroyd wrote after seeing the film at a local theater. “What a propulsive, engaging, funny, beautifully cast and acted, suspenseful, adventurous, musical ride. A perfect window into the creative process at its highest level. Pretty much. It’s also accurate.”
The Ghostbusters actor continued. “I was there that night and had another great experience. Congratulations to Gil, Jason and Bloomie. Whether you know the show or not, don’t miss it. This is an independent It’s a masterpiece and a surefire candidate for Best Picture.”
Saturday Night is set on October 11, 1975, the day SNL first aired, and follows a ferocious band of young comedians and writers who change television forever. Reitman previously told The Hollywood Reporter that finding Aykroyd for the film was the hardest part, saying he was “really scared.” When the filmmakers learned that “Dylan O’Brien is highly regarded” among women, as the actor had “a very unique sex appeal,” Reitman knew he was the perfect man for the role. He said he was convinced he had found it.
Aykroyd also said on social media that he was “excited to see how Jason’s hilarious yet suspenseful story turned out,” as he was “the only original staff member who had a chance to read the script.” .
