The recruiting event will be held on Wednesday, September 4th from 1pm to 3pm at Career Academies of Decatur.
DECATUR, Alabama — We’ve heard a lot about the school-to-career pipeline, but the Decatur City School District wants to help students along that path. The district is preparing for a recruiting event to help people enter the job market in fields like healthcare, automotive and more.
Career Academy of Decatur will be holding a recruiting event on Sept. 4 for students participating in work-study, internships and apprenticeships. Alexia Brown is a full-time senior at Career Academy of Decatur. She is excited about the recruiting event because she wants to gain work experience. “I’m taking blood pressure. I’m doing CPR. When I leave here I’ll be CPR certified. Even if it means sitting at a desk and calling people’s names, anything that I can get closer to is good because I want to go to nursing school. So anything that gives me experience where I can observe is good.”
Alan Zaragoza is also a full-time fourth-year CAD student. His family owns a supermarket in Huntsville. Zaragoza looks forward to one day becoming an entrepreneur and continuing the family legacy. “My dad told me that when he passed away, I would run the company in my name and that I would eventually have to take over. I’m in just the right place to learn more about business and stuff, and if anything goes wrong with the business, I’ll be able to solve it quickly.”
Taylor Atkins, a full-time senior, said the cosmetology program has allowed her to learn more than just hair care: “As a recent graduate, I love doing nails, eyebrow trimming, pedicures and manicures.”
Vocational Education Coordinator Angela Klassing said the recruiting event will be different than a typical job fair, but the overall goal is that “by the time they’re ready to graduate, the students will be ready to go into the job right away, because they’ve observed experienced employees and they’re ready to go right into the job. Hopefully, we’ll be able to hire the students right there and then. That’s the goal.”
