The nomination comes shortly after Trump named Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate through Truth Social, solidifying his position as the Republican nominee in November.
The convention kicked off days after an assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday left one rally attendee dead and two seriously injured. The suspect, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was shot and killed moments later.
The Republican National Convention schedule is expected to remain largely unchanged, but the assassination attempt will heighten the emotional energy of a convention already expected to be fuelled by Trump enthusiasm.
“The first time he steps into that arena, the noise level is going to be so high it’s almost unmeasurable,” Corey Lewandowski, a Trump aide who serves as counsel to the Republican National Committee, said Sunday.
Speakers scheduled for the first day of the convention include Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, rapper Amber Rose and Trump fundraiser David Sachs, as well as former vice presidential candidate and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem.
More than 80 Trump aides, major donors and other lawmakers are scheduled to speak Monday through Thursday, and the city of Milwaukee is expecting an estimated 50,000 attendees.
