One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their life, and experts agree that early detection and treatment are key.
“One of the biggest goals in breast cancer detection is to try to catch cancer before it causes any problems,” FOX News Medical Contributor Dr. Nicole Safia told FOX during an on-camera conversation. He told News Digital.
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), the most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or mass.
10 important things to do after breast cancer diagnosis, experts say
“The most common is a palpable mass,” Safia acknowledged.
“Sometimes people come in with lumps. Sometimes it’s something benign, like a cyst, but sometimes it’s cancerous.”

However, not all red flags are obvious.
“It’s more than just feeling a lump,” Safia says. “There are some other signs that breast cancer can show.”
1. Discharge from the nipples
Studies have shown that nipple discharge is a symptom in 3% to 9% of breast cancer patients.
In particular, Saphier says secretions that contain blood can be a red flag.

“Some of the women…you can see a little bit of blood on their bras,” she says. “This could be a sign of cancer cells in the ducts.”
2. Itchy skin
Safier says some women experience itchy skin, whether it’s the skin of the breast or the nipple itself.
“This may indicate an inflammatory process inside the breast,” she warned.
3. Swollen lymph nodes
Another early sign of breast cancer is a swollen or lump in the lymph nodes, the doctor said.

“That could mean not only that you have cancer in your breast, but that the cancer has spread to your lymph nodes,” Safia says.
4. Skin becomes red or inflamed
This is one of the most common signs of inflammatory breast cancer, according to the ACS, which is a “rare, aggressive disease in which cancer cells block lymph vessels in the skin. type of invasive breast cancer.
“This is a different cancer in the sense that it doesn’t present as a lump,” Dr. Safia told FOX News Digital.
Signs of breast cancer, symptoms to watch out for, and when to schedule regular checkups
Doctors said some people are being treated for weeks or even months for what they think is a skin disease or allergic reaction, when in fact it’s an infection.
“Sometimes the symptoms you see on your skin are due to something a little more sinister going on underneath,” she warned.

Safieh said she often sees patients who are taking steroids and antibiotics but have never had a skin biopsy.
“Until we do a biopsy, we don’t necessarily know if it’s an inflammatory cancer that’s causing these problems,” she says. “And unfortunately, this can lead to later diagnoses.”
