As Shirley Castle’s 90th birthday approaches, the Fort Sill community is preparing to say goodbye to a beloved and long-time figure. Castle, who served as transportation commissioner, is set to retire this November after a distinguished career that spans more than 60 years.
Castle began her career at Fort Sill in May 1960, back when the offices still had typewriters. She started out in the finance department but transferred to the transportation department a year later, where she’s been ever since. Over the years, she’s seen and adapted to major technological advances, which Castle says has been the most challenging part of her long career.
Fort Sill’s Transportation Division plays a vital role in managing the movement of soldiers on and off the installation. Under Castle’s command, the division efficiently handles these logistics, ensuring the smooth movement of countless military personnel. Her dedication and hard work was noticed and she was awarded the Commander’s Excellence Coin as a prestigious recognition for her outstanding contributions.
Castle’s passion for her work stems not only from her love of doing things, but also from her desire to provide for her grandchildren. Born and raised in Sterling, Oklahoma, she grew up on a farm and often looks back fondly on her childhood.
Castle recounts his first job, when he worked for a telephone company, picking cotton for a short time.
“I just bought some cotton bags and thought I’d make a little extra money,” Castle said. “It only took about half a day.”
Family has always been the center of Castle’s life. She has one child, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Her youngest child recently turned four. Most of her family still lives in the area, and they gather every Sunday at her home for a traditional family breakfast.
Besides her professional achievements, Castle is also known for her artistic talents. In the past, she sculpted, fired, painted and glazed numerous ceramic pieces, but unfortunately had to give up these hobbies. Today, she enjoys doodling (often drawing flowers) and visiting casinos from time to time.
Reflecting on his career, Castle expressed gratitude to the employees he worked with over the years and said he hopes they will remember him fondly.
“Well, I hope some of them remember that I’ve mellowed out over the years,” Castle said.
Castle’s dedication and tenacity have made her a beloved figure at Fort Sill. Both of her parents served at Fort Sill, cementing the family tradition at the base. Even as she retires, her impact and memories will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of serving alongside her.
