Apparently the average New York City native hasn’t adopted the “don’t mind work” mentality just yet, but Emily Ratajkowski certainly has.
On Tuesday, the model decided to step out on the streets of the Big Apple in a gray tank top, black bottoms, and glasses, and here she’s walking her adorable dog.
Sure, there was some cleavage and a little exposed hip bone, but Ratajkowski’s style wasn’t too extreme for a city that once held a No Pants Subway Ride Day every January.
Still, according to a social media video posted by Ratajkowski, a passerby seemed to think her outfit was too revealing and decided to make her aware of his displeasure.
“Girl, put on a shirt,” a stranger can be heard saying to the “My Body” author as she walks down the sidewalk.
While Ratajkowski was smart enough not to respond to the man in real time, she did reveal some of her thoughts about the encounter in her post.
In the video, after the man makes a rude comment, Ratajkowski inserts an edited excerpt from Charli XCX’s “365” from her latest album, Brat. The lyrics from the song used in the video are “Who you are? You’re a cocky bitch when you’re smacking it,” which could imply that Ratajkowski is just being cocky (or just being herself) and doesn’t care what the man thinks of her.
The caption for her video is also revealing: “Notoriously not quiet, notoriously not considerate” — a play on the ultra-viral “So quiet, so considerate” meme.
“Classiness is what you mean by that. It’s not just about being considerate and thoughtful of those around you, but also about caring about yourself and how you appear to the world,” Jules Lebron, the TikTok user behind the meme, explained to CBC News.
Ratajkowski’s caption may have been a sarcastic response to the criticism the model has received for her provocative sense of style.
In December 2017, Piers Morgan slammed Ratajkowski for taking part in a lingerie video shoot for Love magazine.
“This is Emily Ratajkowski ‘promoting feminism’ while, somewhere, Emmeline Pankhurst has just vomited,” the British broadcaster wrote on social media, referring to British suffragette activist Emily Ratajkowski. Morgan called Ratajkowski a “global slut” during an episode of “Good Morning Britain” at the time.
Ratajkowski responded, “I never said my love video was a feminist statement, but it’s worth saying now that telling women what to do with their bodies and sexuality is actually classic sexism. I can have an opinion on feminism and I can do sexy photoshoots, thank you.”
In January 2024, the model shared an Instagram slideshow of herself in a low-cut dress, writing, “I’ll never be able to shake the slut allegations so I thought why not be proactive.”
