As the end of summer draws near, fall is right around the corner. And with a new season comes new hair trends. But for 2024, we’re especially interested in what short hair trends will be trending for fall. Combined with the back-to-school mood and wardrobe refresh, fall is the perfect time to change up your hairstyle with a new haircut or hair color. And our love for short hairstyles shows no signs of fading. In fact, it’s a key hair trend for fall. Over the past few years, we’ve seen a ton of bob hairstyle trends. From blunt bobs to bouncy Italian bobs, bell-bottom bobs to hydro bobs, there’s no shortage of bob hairstyle inspiration to take to the salon.
So what’s the next big short hair trend for fall? To find out, I asked Tom Smith, Hairstylist and International Artist in Residence at Billy Curry Salon, and Sam Barnett, Owner and Hairstylist at Hair & Bone Salon, to tell me what they think are the next big short hairstyle trends for fall.
Short Hair Trends for Fall 2024
1. Laser Cut Bob
The laser-cut bob haircut is a surefire way to look sophisticated this fall, says Smith, describing the haircut as “a sharp, precise, one-length bob that’s perfectly cut to sit between the top of the shoulder and the corner of the jaw” and that “looks best parted in the middle and can be paired with bangs, if desired.”
“The length can be tailored to suit your face shape, but keep it at or above chin length for a softer look, or above the chin for a bolder look,” says Smith. “Straight or minimally textured styles work best. This cut adds thickness and density to the hair, making it a great option for those with fine hair. It’s also very easy to achieve for those with naturally flat or fine hair,” he says.
Even Lily Collins has recently opted for a sharp bob hairstyle. Here are the best hairstyling products to keep your style sharp:

2. Tuck Bob
Another short hair trend we’ll see for fall is the tucked bob, says Smith. But what is it? “A one-length or lightly layered bob haircut tucked behind one or both ears. This can be achieved with any bob length or style by simply tucking one or both sides behind the ear,” he says. “It can give an androgynous or businesslike energy and is great for widening a thin or long face or enhancing the appearance of thickness on fine hair types.”
“This is for freshly washed hair,
“Fluffy hair can be difficult to keep behind your ears,” says Smith. “For extra styling support, use a volumizing spray or mousse before blow-drying and a hairspray with strong hold to secure the hair around your ears. For a more stable result, use small clips or slides behind your ears to hold the hair in place.”
If you want to create a sophisticated look for the evening, we recommend pairing it with a hydro bob (aka wet-look bob).

3. Cravict Cut Bob
According to Smith, when it comes to short hair this year, people are leaning towards longer hairstyles. “While bob lengths are returning to chin-length and chin-length styles, such as the tucked and razor-cut bobs that were popular in the fall, there are notably fewer trends shorter than chin-length at the moment,” Smith said. “That may change as we move into winter, but right now there’s a lot of focus on hair health, so many people are opting for longer hair, and improved hair quality is making that possible.” As such, collarbone-length bobs are making a comeback.
“The clavicle bob, also known as a lob or R-lob, gets its name because the length of the cut falls right at your collarbone,” says Barnett. “It’s perfect for someone who wants a more statement style but still wants to wear it in a ponytail.” If you want a short hairstyle that you can tie up for the gym, this cut is the way to go.
“If you have fine hair or want to add some personality, opt for a blunt-cut, one-length chop,” says Barnett. “If you want to soften the style with some natural movement or if your hair is thicker, keep it loose with longer layers,” he says.
