The Chicks
The Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
The Chicks were once one of the biggest names in country music: The band’s breakthrough albums, 1998’s Wide Open Spaces and 1999’s Fly, each sold more than 10 million copies and were awarded the Recording Industry Association of America’s coveted diamond certification.
And in 2003, as the US war with Iraq loomed, singer Natalie Maines told a crowd in London that the band opposed both the war and then-President George W. Bush.
“We don’t want this war, this violence,” Maines said at the Chicks concert, adding, “I’m ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas.”
The incident sparked a backlash against The Chicks in the United States, led by many country radio stations that had previously dominated the group’s playlists.
In 2020, they performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the virtual 2020 Democratic National Convention. Four years later, the Chicks will be performing the national anthem again, this time in front of a sold-out crowd at Chicago’s United Center.
And once again, their performance will have a significant cultural impact: In recent weeks, “Not Ready to Make Nice” has been co-opted by conservative TikTok influencers, who have used the song to voice their opposition to Kamala Harris’ candidacy.
