Former President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Roland Afeile Monyi, has slammed the Member of Parliament representing Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akuair, for saying that “let’s hand Ghana over to economists and not journalists.”
Afeilu Monyi, in an interview with GHOne TV on August 22, 2024, said the remarks made by the lawmaker were unfortunate and suggested they were born out of ignorance or merely an attempt to score political points.
He added that the MPs have worked with journalists as lawyers, ministers and legislators and therefore should know how important journalism is to the governance of the country.
“This assertion is rooted in ignorance. It can be likened to a typical political speech, where politicians with all sorts of preconceived ideas spew all sorts of things just to impress their audience or get votes. Journalism is a very serious job.
“The person who made this allegation is a learned Member of Parliament, he is well known and knows the importance of journalists. He has worked with journalists in his law firm. He has worked with journalists in Parliament too. Can you imagine the kind of darkness that would be cast over the entire Parliament, the second organ of government, if the media decides to boycott their activities? Just imagine. So, I dismiss this as mere political talk,” he said.
The veteran journalist added that the Abuakwa South lawmaker is creating trouble for himself as he will find himself in trouble if the media decides to take action against him.
“Also, I do not want to believe that he is trying to clash with journalists. You can imagine that if the entire Media Committee decides to attack Senator Atta Akiah, the impact will be immense and it will serve as a stern warning to other political activists not to involve journalists in their election strategies,” he said.
Atta Akyea said:
Speaking to reporters at the launch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2024 manifesto, he said Dr Bawumia’s expertise was the best hope for the country’s economic recovery and warned against “gambling” with inexperienced leadership.
“We are still at the 41st floor and I can say categorically that when it comes to economic issues, we should leave it to him,” Atta Akuayea said, highlighting Dr Bawumia’s unique qualities.
“For the first time in this country, we have an economist as president, not a journalist.”
