FSU sociologist receives early career award for work in population health field

Patricia Homan, associate professor of sociology and director of research and strategic initiatives in the public health program, received the Milbank Quarterly Early Career Award in Population Health at the September IAPHS conference.

An associate professor in the School of Social Sciences and Public Policy has become the first Florida State University faculty member to receive the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Sciences (IAPHS) Early Career Award for her work in the field of population health.

Patricia Homan received the Milbank Quarterly Early Career Award in Population Health at the IAPHS conference in September.

“This is a great honor and I am very happy to receive this recognition,” Homan said. “None of this would have been possible without the excellent mentorship and support I received at FSU, which allowed me to grow as an early career scholar. I am especially grateful to my colleagues and mentors in the Department of Sociology, the Public Health Program, and the School of Social Sciences and Public Policy for making this a great place for me.”

Homan is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology, director of research and strategic initiatives in the Public Health Program, faculty assistant in the Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy, and research associate in the Center for Demography and Population Health.

This award recognizes significant contributions to the population health sciences by individuals who have earned a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent graduate degree within the past 10 years. It emphasizes contributions from multiple disciplines to address population health issues. The winner will receive a $3,000 honorarium and up to $1,500 for conference attendance.

Homan’s research develops theory and measurement of structural sexism, structural racism, and other forms of structural oppression, and examines how these forces shape health in the United States. is focused on. Before joining the School of Social Sciences and Public Policy in 2018, Homan earned a doctorate in sociology from Duke University.

Homan’s other awards include the 2022 National Institutes of Health Matilda White Riley Early Stage Investigator Award, the 2022 Southern Social Women’s Sociologist Early Career Gender Scholar Award, and the 2021 American Sociological Association (ASA) Excellence in Sex & Gender Division. Best Paper Award, and the 2019 Roberta G. Simmons Outstanding Paper Award from the ASA Division of Medical Sociology.
