The museum’s second annual recycled fashion show, “Garbage Gram,” will be held Saturday, October 5. It will begin at 6 p.m. with appetizers from Miss Fay Café, which will offer beer, wine, cocktails and other snacks with a cash bar. The fashion show will begin at 7 p.m. For tickets, click here. This is also the last day of “Throwback Pricing,” celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Putnam building. Museum admission is 25 cents for adults and 10 cents for children.
The Garbage Glam fashion show was inspired by last year’s “Junkraft: The Global Crisis of Plastic Pollution” exhibition, which featured “Junk,” a handmade raft made from 15,000 recycled plastic bottles for buoyancy. The two-man crew set out from Los Angeles without a motor or support boat and spent 13 weeks drifting to Hawaii, with the goal of raising awareness about the more than 5 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean.
The Recycled Fashion Show was born in 2023 to raise awareness of waste and pollution in the industry. Seven designers made clothes from recycled materials and models wore the creations down the catwalk in the museum’s Grand Lobby. In 2023, the fashion industry produced 97 million tonnes of waste. This includes 18 million tonnes of leftover textiles, 2.5 million tonnes of chemical waste and 3 million tonnes of packaging materials.
This year’s show’s clothes are expected to be made from everything from plastic bottles to grocery bags, with each piece required to contain at least 70% recycled materials. Garbage Glam has doubled the number of entries from last year, with 14 models set to take to the runway. Designers are competing for the Best in Show award, which is judged on creativity, construction and performance.
The show will be hosted by Miss Central Iowa Amber Martenson, who is the founder of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization The Joy of Art and a K-4 art teacher.
