When Hailey Bieber first started dating her now-husband, Justin Bieber, in 2018, it was controversial to say the least.
Prior to his relationship with Hailey, Justin had been in an on-and-off relationship with Selena Gomez since 2011.
Justin and Selena ultimately split in March 2018, just three months after he went public with his relationship with Hailey.
As Justin’s relationship status changed surprisingly quickly, Selena and Hailey were regularly at odds and often at the center of fierce attacks from the other’s fans.
That same year, while appearing on the podcast “Call Her Daddy,” she said the public reaction to her and Justin’s wedding was “really extreme, really crazy.”
And in a new interview with W magazine, Hailey admitted that the scrutiny her and Justin’s relationship faces on a regular basis still hurts, even after six years, and acknowledged that public perception has hurt their romance from the start.
“From day one, everyone made me feel so bad about my relationship,” Hailey told the magazine. “‘Oh, they’re breaking up. They hate each other. They’re getting divorced.’ It was like people didn’t want to believe that we were happy.”
“I tried to act like the pain was going to get less and less, that at some point I’d get used to it, that people would say this, that people would be like this,” she added, “but I realised that it wasn’t actually going to get less.”
