Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have tapped 16 of Hollywood’s most popular designers for their latest merchandise launch.
After making waves with its Chapel Lawn-inspired camouflage caps, the Harris-Waltz campaign launched the “Designers for Democracy” collection, featuring apparel and accessories from brands like Sergio Hudson, Thom Browne and Joseph Altuzarra, worn by Harris, former first ladies Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton, and countless other stars.
Reproductive rights, climate change and voting awareness are some of the themes in the 2024 Election Collection ($35-$85), which includes T-shirts, tank tops, long-sleeve shirts, hoodies, sweaters, tote bags and more. Items include an Ulla Johnson floral terrycloth hoodie with “Our Bodies” and “Our Vote” embroidered on the sleeve, a Victor Grumeau tank top with the phrase “we are not going back / kamala” across the chest, a gray sweater by Willie Chavarria with “Kamala.,” and a black T-shirt by poet and artist Cleo Wade featuring a childhood photo of the Democratic presidential candidate with the words “First but not last.”
Other pieces include a retro “America is an Idea” T-shirt and two pairs of ribbed socks by Brother Berry’s designer and 15 Percent Pledge founder Aurora James (her pieces are currently sold out), graphic tote bags by Tory Burch and Brett Heyman, and a reversible “Let’s win this” scarf inspired by the American flag by Thom Browne. Gabriela Hearst created a pink-and-purple gradient baseball cap and sweatshirt with the words “Democracy, Women’s Rights, Climate,” while Chloe Christine designer Bettina Benson’s white T-shirt reads “We Choose Freedom” above a floral illustration. Jonathan Cohen, Prabal Gurung, and Vera Wang also collaborated on designs for the collection.
According to the website, the clothing is made in the U.S. and guild printed. The products are available for pre-sale, with orders to ship in early October.
Megan Burdick, senior campaign adviser at Kamala HQ, told Vogue , “Vice President Harris and Governor Tim Walz are fighting to strengthen our democracy, protect reproductive freedom, and for a future where all people have the opportunity to not just survive, but to advance. Designers for Democracy is a group of beloved American designers who believe in that vision and are working to get Harris and Waltz into the White House.”
James explained his T-shirt design on Instagram, saying, “America is a beautiful, strange and rich place. America is also an idea. And whose idea America is will be put to the vote this November across the nation. For too long, people like me have been made to feel like we don’t belong here. But America belongs to us all, and we are all equal. And we belong to America. America is our home, our heart, and our idea.”
Sergio Hudson shot to fame when she wore a full-length plum dress by the Los Angeles-based designer to President Joe Biden’s 2021 inauguration. Harris also wore a custom sequined cocktail dress by the designer, topped off with a floor-length tuxedo overcoat, for her first appearance as vice president that evening. Most recently, she wore a bright blue suit by the designer to the 2024 Essence Festival of Culture. Hudson wore a plaid tailored dress by Thom Browne to President Barack Obama’s 2013 inauguration. Hillary Clinton also wore a red Altuzarra gown to the 2022 Met Gala.
