What are you planning to do this weekend? I’m driving down to Vermont to pick up Anton from summer camp. I can’t wait to hold this boy!!! I’ll have some cookies in the car and I’ve made a playlist that he’ll find lame. Oh, how sad. Have a great weekend. Here are some links from around the web…
In today’s Big Salad issue, we feature Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen, who reveals her dream dinner party, complete with three fictional guests, four recipes, and a gorgeous tablecloth. Plus, she shares her favorite Trader Joe’s products and the career advice she received from Ina Garten.
This English-style children’s room with three beds is so cute.
I love the shape of these jeans and would love to wear them with a loose fitting t-shirt or boat neck sweater.
Have you seen Janet Planet? The story is twisty and beautiful and moving, and the characters’ voices sounded so authentic.

My kids and I have smelled this all summer, mmm.

Hahaha, middle school boy.
Additionally, there are three comments from readers.
Abe shares five fun facts: “As a Minnesota native, I love Tim Walz. As someone who makes a living as an hourly consultant, the biggest benefit of his time as governor was that Minnesota passed the Sick & Safe Act in 2024, which allows for accrued paid leave for sick days, childcare, and more. As a mother of three, including twins, I can’t tell you how much this has changed my life for the better. This is an example of the positive, progressive change he has ushered in. He really supports women, and everyone, in so many different ways.”
Julie shares five joyful things: “Hope in politics is such a wonderful emotion. I know we shouldn’t wait to feel hope (rather we should be involved in the action and recovery), but I’d forgotten the joyous feeling of anticipation in my bones. It’s fragile, isn’t it? And it’s so wonderful.”
Betsy has this to say about 5 fun things: “Hi Joanna and everyone! I know the comments get super heated when we get political, but what I wanted to say is that in college I fell into a fundamentalist cult that turned Christian nationalism up to 11. You guessed it, that’s exactly what I was: homophobic, anti-choice, anti-Semitic, proponents of the Great Replacement Theory. All of it coming from a closed community that restricted my movements and forced me to proselytize two days a week. Coincidentally, that was also when I started reading CoJ, around 2009. I was in it for the fashion roundups and the *glamorous* New York lifestyle, and I was disgusted and emotionally assaulted by what I perceived as “liberal brainwashing,” but I read it anyway and couldn’t get it out of my head, even if I didn’t really want it to. Joanna was so warm, principled, and logical. Once she started inviting guest writers from a variety of backgrounds, I was exposed to more perspectives than I’d ever been exposed to before. Now, several years later, and officially only 4 years away from where I was, with lots of therapy, I’m in a better place. I’ve come out as queer to a select few people, including my Jewish fiancé (now I know why I was fascinated by the “Same Sex Marriage Legalized in NYC” post, lol), and I’ve recast almost every core value I once held, even though I never would have done that 5 years ago. So thank you, and don’t get discouraged. For some of us, it’s in for the long haul. But hopefully it won’t be too long.”
