If this is how things play out over the next two weeks of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, we can expect some great matches.
Hideki Matsuyama was riding high and appearing to be in the lead at the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday when it happened moments later: He went bogey, par, bogey, double bogey over four holes at TPC Southwind and suddenly found himself one stroke behind Viktor Hovland.
But the Japanese star birdied the final two holes to win by two strokes, finishing with an even-par 70 for a total score of 17-under 263. Xander Schauffele and Hovland tied for second. Scottie Scheffler was fourth.
Matsuyama won his first FedEx Cup Playoff title, taking home $3.6 million out of a total prize pool of $20 million.
He currently sits in third place behind Schaeffler and Schauffele heading into the BMW Championship in Castle Pines, Colorado.
But the top 50 is just as important as the winners, because players within that magic mark will qualify for every major PGA Tour event in 2025. Nick Dunlap entered the week in 67th place but finished tied for fifth with Sam Burns and has risen 17 places to 48th. Eric Cole improved eight places to finish 46th, while Tom Kim dropped from 43rd to 51st and Mackenzie Hughes dropped from 48th to 52nd. Their seasons are over.
Hovlan is the defending FedExCup champion and was ranked pretty low, 57th, before the week began, but after a 66-66 weekend, he’s now in 16th place and in strong position to defend his title.
