LONDON — Chanel is strengthening its connection to the cinema by partnering with acclaimed Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda to launch a new program called “Chanel & Cinema – Tokyo Light.”
The director of “Shoplifters,” which won the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, will host a series of lectures for aspiring film directors at Waseda University’s Okuma Auditorium on November 27 and 28.
Koreeda will lead the program, which will feature special appearances from Chanel ambassador Tilda Swinton, director Nishikawa Miwa, and other friends of the brand.

The workshop will introduce young filmmakers to the behind-the-scenes of the entertainment industry and give them the opportunity to take part in a short film competition that will be presented during the master class.
Chanel will sponsor the three selected films and screen them in Tokyo and Paris.
In March, the brand kicked off its Paris Fashion Week show paying homage to classic French cinema, starring Brad Pitt and Penélope Cruz in a re-enactment of a cult scene from Claude Lelouch’s 1966 film “A Man and a Woman.”

The Hollywood stars blaze in black and white footage, with Anouk Aimée and Jean-Louis Trintignant reprising their roles originally played, set to the film’s iconic soundtrack by Francis Lai.
The original film won the Grand Prix at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival and numerous awards at the Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay.
