Law Roach has not had time to rest since he surprised the public last year by announcing that he would retire. When he first spoke about his retirement to the cut last year, he said he was ready for a change. I think not doing that job would give me the time and ability to try other things. And if you fail at everything else, you will fail at everything else. ”It turns out he didn’t fail at all. Stylists are doing more than ever. His latest venture is the acquisition of School of Style, an online education platform for stylists, alongside Only Agency. Starting early next year, he will be teaching an eight-week styling course that includes lessons in fittings, photography, pre-production and more. This month he also published his first book, How to Become a Fashion Icon.
The book is 188 pages in 8 chapters and serves as a step-by-step guidebook on how to build images. The film tells the story of a Chicago-raised stylist who built a celebrity clientele and prefers the title “image architect.” He begins the book by sharing one of his most memorable moments with Zendaya, when she won the Fashion Icon Award at the 2021 CFDA Awards. “Watching Zendaya go on stage brought tears to my eyes,” he recalls. “That night, she wore a bright red custom look by Vera Wang. We chose a column skirt with a peplum, a bandeau top, and a cropped jacket. Maybe that’s what people expected from her (or Vera). “His substantial career moments are just a few of the book’s highlights, as he finds his confidence and unapologetically being himself.” It follows readers as they lean into being present and helps readers learn how to create a wardrobe.
Whether she works in fashion or not, Roach does a great job of sharing some of her storytelling and inspiration. In one chapter, he talks about what inspires him: “I’m always watching movies and old documentaries, and Mahogany by Diana Ross is one of my favorites, whether it’s in the car on my way to my next appointment or when I’m alone waiting for my food order. I always end up falling down the rabbit hole of Instagram and TikTok, where there is a constant flow of inspiration and education from so many sources at the touch of our fingers. If you do, you’ll see evidence of these inspirations everywhere: buy odes and homages to old movies, even pieces of real history, and put them (or me) on them to bring them to life. I will.”
This book is available for $28.
