Ice Cube shared the “proudest” moment of his career, saying it was especially gratifying because of the resistance he faced in pursuing it.
The NWA legend was a guest on former NBA star Iman Shumpert and his brother Aarii’s podcast, “Iman Amongst Men,” where he reflected on his illustrious career.
When asked about the “proudest honor of his career,” Cube replied, “Wow… Friday. I was a little bit out of my league as far as writing and producing. I did a comedy, and people were surprised at the time because there was nothing comedic about my music.”
“Our music was kind of funny, but it was all hardcore, so people thought I was a little weird. ‘Hey, Ice Cube is doing comedy?'”
The West Coast rap veteran said his classic track “It Was a Good Day” gave him the confidence to develop “Friday.”
“I learned from ‘It Was a Good Day,’ which for me was a song version of ‘Friday,'” he added. “This is me stepping out of the box. Everything was so hard, and here I was flipping it on its head.”
“I’m a reality TV rapper, so on a good day I should be able to rap about that too.”

Ice Cube has been embroiled in a long-running dispute with Warner Bros. over ownership of his “Friday” film series, but he recently sounded optimistic about the franchise’s future.
During an interview with SiriusXM’s “Flavor of the Week” in June, the 55-year-old revealed that the series could be revived after a hiatus of more than two decades.
“We’ve finally made progress with Warner Bros.,” he told host Flavor Flav. “They have new management. My friend Mike DeLuca was there when I first got to New Line, when I first did Friday, Players Club, All About the Benjamins. Mike DeLuca was there, and now he’s running Warner Bros.”
Additionally, the Straight Outta Compton star shared a summary of his conversation with the studio.
“It was like, ‘Hey, what the hell is going on on Friday? Hey, let’s get this back online,'” he continued. “I was kind of pissed off that it took so long because John Witherspoon passed away. Tiny passed away. AJ Johnson passed away.
“So we keep losing people and people are just slogging away and not doing movies the way they need to. They want to do it, but the point is, it has to be done. If it’s not, we shouldn’t be touching it. So they’ve finally come to their senses.”
So far, the trilogy consists of Friday (1995), Next Friday (2000) and Friday After Next (2002). Last year, Cube revealed that Warner Bros. not only owns the name of the franchise he created, but also the names of its characters.
