Clement Apak, ranking member of the Assembly’s education committee
The ranking member of Parliament’s Education Committee, Senator Clement Apak, has called on government to provide clarity on the total number of tablet devices procured for Senior High School (SHS) students.
He said conflicting reports about the number of tablet devices were a concern and warned the government could leave office with a large debt burden in the education sector.
“We are not against the distribution of tablets to SHS students. The NDC had a similar policy in place. However, it is problematic for government to falsely claim that it has procured and supplied 900,000 tablets when in fact it has not. Why is government not doing the needful through its ministries when in fact it has been asked to do so by the Speaker of National Assembly,” Clement Apak said at a press conference in Parliament on August 22, 2024.
Apak further expressed concern that the current administration is likely to leave the education sector with huge debts, not only in terms of unpaid bills to suppliers of tablets but also school uniforms, stationery, sportswear and other goods.
“The government needs to be honest and forthright about what it has done and what it has not done,” he stressed.
The NPP leader, during the launch of his manifesto, announced the distribution of 900,000 free tablets for students across the country.
The tablets are fully funded by GETFund and are part of the government’s Smart Schools project which aims to digitise all sectors of the country.
