Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is officially out on Switch, and retro gamers who’ve picked up a copy are starting to discover all the cool (and not-so-cool) things about it.
In case you missed it, the cool thing about this game is that when you set up your profile, you’re asked to select your “favorite NES game” (or Famicom game) from a list that supposedly showcases every game in this classic Nintendo console’s library.
This has been highlighted on social media, and video producer Zion Grassl also touched on it in his Nintendo Life “Hands-On” preview back in June. Here’s what he had to say:
“You can also share your favorite NES games with the world. It contains a list of nearly every game officially released for the Nintendo Entertainment System, including games like Spy vs. Spy and Superman that likely weren’t mentioned due to licensing issues. There’s no box art, but as an NES fan for 25 years, this is a nice little detail for me. I can’t wait to find EarthBound Beginnings and Bubble Bobble.”
Me too! This is a really great feat. It’s really awesome to see Nintendo acknowledging all these games in such a fun way.— Zion Grassl (@ZionDood) July 18, 2024
So, if you don’t already have this new release, Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is packed with retro goodness. Unfortunately, the game isn’t all that popular, leaderboard-wise. Reviewer PJ O’Reilly had this to say about it in an update to his Nintendo Life review:
“Since the start of the live stream, it has become clear that the leaderboard here does not work in-game the way we imagined, which has caused quite a stir among players. The leaderboard is not freely accessible at any time, and you cannot see your friends or directly compete with their results. Furthermore, you can only access the rankings at the end of the weekly challenge, so you have no freedom in how you compete. This is a silly decision and one we did not expect. We hope it will be resolved as soon as possible.”
In related news, Nintendo has already released an update unlocking Survival Mode and including some fixes.
