Colorectal cancer is a disease in which cancer cells grow in the large intestine or rectum, located at the lower end of the digestive tract. Common symptoms of colorectal cancer include bloody stools, abdominal pain, anemia, fatigue, abdominal discomfort and weight loss. Depending on the stage and spread of the cancer, treatment options like surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are suggested. Recently, there has been an alarming trend of a sharp rise in colorectal cancer cases among young adults. Lifestyle and dietary habits are one of the contributing factors. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Neeraj Dhingra, MBBS, MD, DNB (Oncologist), Consultant Radiation and Clinical Oncology, pointed out the reasons for this trend.

Reasons for the increase in colorectal cancer among young adults:
Demographic changes:
Colorectal cancer rates are increasing among young adults due to changes in lifestyle, including more sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy diets high in processed foods and low in fiber.
Genetic predisposition:
People with a family history of colorectal cancer or those with genetic syndromes such as Lynch syndrome are more likely to develop the disease at a younger age.
Delayed diagnosis:
Symptoms in young adults may be overlooked or considered a less serious illness, leading to delayed diagnosis until the cancer has reached an advanced stage.

If you have a family history of cancer or any symptoms that concern you, you should get tested and get expert advice as soon as possible.
Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
Both are associated with an increased risk of cancer, including colorectal cancer.
Maintain a healthy weight:
Obesity is a risk factor for many cancers, including colorectal cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight is important.
Awareness and education:
Increase awareness among young adults about the signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer and encourage proactive health-seeking behaviors and regular screening for early detection.
